The Light Forum is a place for peer-to-peer support and discussions. The Forum is moderated by staff and volunteers from Light.

If you use the Forum, please comply with these Terms and Conditions.

  • You must be 18 or over to use the Forum – some Content may not be suitable for younger people.
  • You must comply with our Forum Guidelines – please help us keep this a safe & friendly place for everyone.
  • The Forum is for peer support and advice; it should not be used as a substitute for professional advice. Please consult your GP, Health Visitor, Midwife or other relevant professionals before making any decisions that could affect you or others.
  • The Forum is not monitored 24/7 – we aim to have moderators check the Forum every day, but this cannot be guaranteed.
  • Please send an email to  contactus@lightpeersupport.org.uk to report any concerns or inappropriate content.
  • If you break our Forum Guidelines we may have to remove you and/or your content from the Forum.
  • The Forum is for personal use only and we will remove any advertising.
  • We will only share the information you provide to us with other people or organisations in accordance with our Privacy Policy (below).

Privacy Policy

We collect certain information or data about you when you use the Light Sheffield Forum This includes:

  • Any information that you give to us, including your email address if you send an email.
  • Your IP address and details of which version of web browser you used.
  • Information on how you use the site. We collect cookies and page tagging techniques to help us improve the Forum.

Your data is stored in a secure server and any data transferred to paper is stored securely in a locked filing cabinet in a locked office.

We have procedures in place and a security certificate for our website to keep your data secure once we receive it, though we cannot guarantee absolute security of your data, as the internet is generally not completely secure.

We will not share your information with anyone for marketing, market research or commercial purposes or pass on your details to other websites. You will always be asked if we can share any information that you pass to us, unless we have a legal obligation to do so, e.g. if there is a safeguarding risk, in which case we will act in accordance with English law and policy.

You can always ask us what information we hold about you and ask us not to use any of the information that we collect.

Light may make changes and additions to this policy from time to time.

What to do in a Crisis

If you urgently need to speak to someone or are experiencing extreme emotional distress then you might want to consider the following advice from the Sheffield Mental Health Guide:

Within working hours (Monday to Friday, 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.)

Are you currently under the care of one of the Sheffield Health and Social Care Teams?


Contact the mental health professional assigned to your care. If they are not available, ask to speak to the duty worker or team.
Note: depending upon the service you are receiving, help may be available at other times. If this is the case, the service will provide you with details.


Contact your GP practice. If you do not know the number for your GP’s practice, you can find this in the telephone directory, or by phoning NHS 111.

Outside working hours (evenings and weekends)

The out of hours GP service can be contacted by phoning the number you would usually use to contact your GP. A GP or clinician will advise you over the telephone, or arrange an urgent appointment or home visit.

NHS 111 can offer advice and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free. You can phone them on 111. NHS 111 will ask for some basic information, including details of any medication you may be taking. If you’re calling on behalf of someone else, you’ll need to provide this information on their behalf. They will assess the problem and advise on the best course of action which may be to see a health professional, such as your GP. If the problem is very serious, they can help access the ambulance service.

Sheffield Telephone Helpline

There is a telephone helpline for anyone in Sheffield affected by mental health issues. It is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call 0808 801 0440 if you need support. Calls from landlines are free. Many mobile phone providers will not charge you however please be aware that this is not always the case and your provider may charge you and the call might appear on your bill.

Emergency situations

If you or someone else is at immediate risk of serious harm or injury, you should call the emergency services by dialling 999.

If your situation is very serious and you need help immediately, or in a life-threatening situation, the Accident & Emergency department at the Northern General Hospital is open 24 hours a day every day of the year.
