Support Group Volunteer

Our Support Group volunteers facilitate the running of peer support groups in various Family Centres in Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster that offer a safe place for parents, with their babies & young children, to access support from others in similar circumstances.

Core Tasks
  • Helping to set up sessions i.e. put out resources / set up the room / organise refreshments and help tidy away at the end of the session
  • Welcoming parents and babies; helping them to feel comfortable & relaxed
  • Making hot drinks and offering refreshments
  • Actively contributing towards group and individual conversations; supporting mums to be involved in discussions
  • Updating and informing the group with relevant information
  • Sharing information and any concerns regarding families accessing support with the Light Service Manager or Group Coordinator at an appropriate time (e.g. at the end of the session if not before) and following the correct procedures
  • Feeding back the needs, wants and desires of the group
  • Attending any training that the management deem necessary to the role
Skills / experience/ qualities required
  • Good listening skills and empathy with families
  • A caring and positive attitude to helping & supporting families
  • Have an interest in mental health around childbirth
  • Have a non-judgmental attitude, an awareness of equal opportunities and the ability to work in accordance with equal opportunities principles
  • Understand and maintain confidentiality
  • Willingness to attend training & mentoring meetings
Skills / experience you will gain in this role
  • Experience making a difference to families lives, offering them much needed support
  • A chance to develop your people and listening skills
  • Experience working with mums and families who a struggling with their mental health and gain a better understanding of how support services work in Sheffield
  • A chance to gain experience in a voluntary organisation

  1. Travel Expenses
  2. Reasonable meal expenses when volunteering more than 5 hours at an event
  3. Reasonable parking fees related to volunteering
