Volunteer Stories – Kate
Kate is one of our volunteer counsellors, providing emotional support and guidance to mums, helping them to feel understood, less anxious and more confident.
Why did you want to volunteer for Light?
I was studying to become a counsellor and was interested in supporting people with mental health conditions, particularly anxiety. My friend was already volunteering at light and thought it would be ideal. After talking with Light I felt very enthusiastic about not only helping people with anxiety but also supporting new mums. I am a mother of two young girls aged 6 years and 14 years and know how challenging pregnancy and motherhood can be.
How do you think your own experiences help to support others?
I suffered for years from debilitating anxiety and I remember how fearful and alone I felt thinking I would never feel normal again. Eventually I did find a way to overcome my anxiety.
In my recovery I remember the countless number of times I had searched the internet and forums or looked for help and advice. I thought back to how many people accessed the forums with similar stories, and I knew there were so many people out there still suffering from mental health issues. I knew I couldn’t help everyone but I felt like I wanted to be able to reach out in some way and let at least one person know that they are not alone and there is light at the end of the tunnel. I started counselling with that goal in mind. My own experience has given me the empathy needed to support others in need.
Light is a fantastic service; I only wish I had known about light when I needed support. I am so thankful for the opportunity that light has given me and I feel privileged to be a part of such a wonderful service.
What is the best thing about volunteering?
The rewarding feeling of supporting others and feeling like I am making a positive impact on someone’s life.
If I was to sum up what volunteering means to me I would say it’s very rewarding, life changing and worthwhile.
Thank you Kate for all the support that you continue to give to mums and for your dedication and commitment to Light.
