Why join Light Peer Support?

Light is a perinatal mental health peer support charity, set up in 2010, which has grown to support parents and their families across South Yorkshire. We’re led by our passion to support mental health during pregnancy and beyond for all families from all communities.

We work across South Yorkshire with families who are experiencing emotional and mental health difficulties in the perinatal period, working in partnership across the statutory and voluntary sector to raise awareness of perinatal mental health difficulties and the support available.

You could join a close-knit team in delivering our vision for all families to have access to effective peer support for anyone struggling with their mental health and emotional wellbeing during pregnancy, birth and afterwards.

You will gain a rewarding insight into how charities work with statutory bodies and grant funders and how a charity is run, and gain experience of the perinatal mental health sector.

In the past year we’ve significantly expanded our services and are currently undergoing a review of our long-term strategic direction which our new Trustees will be a part of, so it’s an exciting time to join us.

What we do

We run peer support groups across South Yorkshire in family hubs and from the Light hub in Sheffield. We also offer 1-1 support face to face or via telephone, text or email.

Peer support is provided by individuals with their own lived experience of struggles in the perinatal period who are able to give hope to and support others in their recovery journey.

Please take a look through the website to find out more about the services we offer and how you could be helping families across South Yorkshire.

What you will be doing

Our board of Trustees are all volunteers. They set the strategic direction for the organisation and ensure that service excellence is maintained. They help make decisions and support the CEO and staff.

We are also accountable to donors and funders; beneficiaries; staff and volunteers & the general public.

We meet every 6-8 weeks, either in person or via Teams.

All new trustees are provided with an induction that includes 1-1 time with the Chief Executive, staff and volunteers, and peer support from fellow Trustees. Other training will be provided as required.

Our Trustees are unpaid, but we do pay reasonable expenses incurred in attending events and meetings.
